County Championship Draws for 2016:
The new format for the county championship programme begins this coming season. In the senior hurling championship there are 25 teams eligible for the 1st round draw and the draw took place on Sunday December 13th 2015. The uneven number of teams requires a preliminary round to be played and the two teams contesting this preliminary round are Killeagh v Muskerry. The winners of the tie go up against Newtownshandrum in the first round proper and the losers of the tie go into round 2B losers round where they will face the loser of the Erin’s Own/CIT Round 1 game. More details and explanations of the new format are available on the Cork GAA website.
Golf Society:
Captain 2015: Trish Landers President 2015: Kieran Scully
The final outing for the society had to be re-fixed due to recent poor weather but thankfully it took place on Saturday December 19th at West Waterford Golf Club. The Christmas scramble is a fun outing and is a great way for beginners to get involved in the society and it was very well supported. There was a great buzz in the clubhouse beforehand, mainly, due to the complimentary ‘Hot Toddies’ provided by Austin Spratt and his staff. It is the twenty third year to hold the Christmas Scramble at the Dungarvan venue and it is of great benefit to both parties. The course was in great condition despite all the recent rain and it is a credit to Austin and his staff that the course is so well presented for all visitors. Ray Rochford combined players to balance out teams and level out the competition. The winners on an impressive 56 were Ger Ahern, Haulie Collins and Adrian Galvin, second place on 57 were Ger Fitzgibbon, Brendan Galvin and Eoin Fitzgibbon, third place also on 57 were Tim McCarthy, Cathal Deane and Ruardhi McSweeney. There was a prize for everyone who took part on the day which was well received. While presenting the prizes, our Vice-Captain, Mr Tim Crotty thanked all those who turned up to play in this end-of-season ‘Fun Scramble’ and looked forward to returning to West Waterford for Christmas Scramble number 24 next year, he thanked Austin and the hard working staff at West Waterford for their hospitality throughout the day and for presenting a fabulous course on which to play. He praised Dominic and Maurette Fogarty for once again sponsoring the outing and encouraged all to continue to support all our sponsors whenever we can. Also singled out for special mention was Bus Driver for the day, Haulie Collins who provided a very valuable courier service to ensure maximum enjoyment for those who availed of the service. He wished everyone a happy Christmas and thanked them once again for supporting the society by playing in the outing.

Eastern ‘A’ Hurling League Final
Aghabullogue 1-14, Killeagh-Ita’s 2-9
Eleven months after pre-season training began with a run in Glenbower Woods, the final game of the season for our Under 16 hurlers ended in an agonising defeat at the hands of county champions Aghabullogue in Ballincollig on Saturday last. On a beautiful afternoon, which felt more like an August day than the day before winter’s arrival, a couple of decisions were critical to the final result here. With the game finely balanced with ten minutes left, a clear-cut trademark Richie Long point was inexplicably waved wide by the umpire, while shortly afterwards, a free awarded within 30 metres of the Aghabullogue goal which may have put us ahead was lost when referee Kevin Bohane decided to throw in the ball instead. We still had time to win it, mind you, but it was Aghabullogue who scored three of the final four points in the last five minutes to edge the game and add the League title to their Eastern A and County Championship titles.
Just like our championship encounter in Caherlag in July, Aghabullogue got off to a flier with a goal from their wing-back after three minutes. Our boys responded brilliantly, however, with excellent points from Padraig Leahy and Jamie Landers, followed by a cracking Richie Long goal, giving us a 1-2 to 1-0 lead after six minutes. Jamie was doing damage in his new full-forward position, and gave a beautiful pass to Richie for his goal. Our defence was keeping Aghabullogue at bay, with cúl báire Fionn McDonnell making a double save and corner backs Kieran Daly and Darragh Geary very tight-marking, but our star man at this end was Dylan Hogan, a ‘rock’ at full-back from start to finish. Keane Budds was doing trojan work at centre back, assisted by Barry Motherway and Shane Kearney on the wings, and Adrian Galvin’s excellent work on the left wing. Nonetheless, gradually Aghabullogue came more into the game, scoring three points by the sixteenth minute to level the game again, our sole response being a free converted by Sean Walsh. From here to half-time the sides were level at 1-4, 1-5 and 1-6 each, with our scores coming again from a second Sean free and two points from Jamie, before an injury time free gave Aghabullogue a one point half-time lead.
The second half saw us get a good start with Richie Long striking over within two minutes of the resumption, before Aghabullogue’s centre forward got two of his own to open the gap to two. Scores were now hard to come by with both defences working really hard, but on 43 minutes, Jamie Landers goaled after excellent work from a swarm of forwards in front of the Aghabullogue goal. Unfortunately, we conceded a free immediately to level the game once more. The next twelve minutes saw each side add just one point each, before those two decisions went against us. In those final minutes, the sliotar flew up and down the pitch while the tackles flew in from all sides. Daniel Hickey and Padraig Leahy continued their relentless foraging in the middle third, while James Kent joined in enthusiastically on his introduction. Nonetheless, we were outscored three points to one in those last minutes, with Sean Walsh’s shot going over, rather than under the bar, and Aghabullogue getting the final point for a two-point victory. It was a tough one to swallow for our brave team who gave their best effort throughout the game, and scant reward for their efforts throughout the season. In terms of trophies, the season has ended without success for our Under 16s, but only one team beat us in league or championship throughout the year, while huge strides were made in hurling and team-play skills by these players, thanks to the efforts and commitment of Dick Walsh and Richie Brennan to these boys. Considering just six of this panel are Under 16s, it bodes well for the future if the boys can maintain their interest and work-rate. Well done, time to reflect now and get ready in a while for 2016!
Team: Fionn McDonnell (Captain), Darragh Geary, Dylan Hogan, Kieran Daly, Shane Kearney, Keane Kelly Budds, Barry Motherway, Padraig Leahy (0-1), Daniel Hickey, Olin Hennessy, Sean Walsh (0-4, 0-3f), Adrian Galvin, Richie Landers, Jamie Landers (1-3), Richie Long (1-1). Subs: Ryan McCarthy, Olan Broderick, James Kent, Jack Wyse, Cian McDonald, Dara Motherway.
Who? Where? When? What?
One of our Under 16 players, Barry Motherway, has been selected by his school, Pobalscoil na Tríonóide, to travel to Kolkata (Calcutta) in India next March with the HOPE Foundation, along with Ciara Crowley from Youghal and a larger group of second-level students. To aid Barry and Ciara’s fundraising efforts, a Table Quiz will be held in Hickey’s Bar (Long’s), Mount Uniacke on Friday November 13th @ 8.30 p.m. All proceeds from the night will go directly to HOPE Foundation, so all support would be greatly appreciated. A fun night is assured, all for a good cause.
Juvenile AGM – Monday November 30th
The AGM of Killeagh-Ita’s Juvenile Club takes place in the meeting room of Páirc Uí Chinnéide on the last day of this month, Monday November 30th @ 7.30 p.m. We would like as large a turnout as possible of parents, club members and current players to review our many activities of 2015 and to begin to plan for 2016 and beyond. Spread the word, and put a big circle around November 30th in your diary.

Fé 16 Eastern A Hurling League Semi-Final
Killeagh-Ita’s 1-16, Courcey Rovers 2-12
It took twenty minutes of extra time to finally get a winner in this close encounter played in Páirc Uí Chinnéide on Tuesday evening last. Even then, it took a last minute point from Sean Walsh, only our second point from play in forty minutes, to secure the victory which had looked unlikely at various points during the game. After fourteen minutes we trailed by 2-3 to 0-2 and looked in dire trouble, but the ship steadied and a goal from Sean Walsh followed immediately by an excellent point from Keane Kelly Budds meant that we retired at half-time only two points down – 2-3 to 1-4. Having gone two up then half way through the second half (1-9 to 2-4), we had to score an injury-time free to equalise after Courceys had scored three in a row. Extra time saw Courceys score four excellent points in the first ten minutes, while Padraig Leahy replied with a fine point from play and Sean Walsh’s free left us two behind once again. Shane Kearney proved to be the hero in the final ten minutes, scoring three long-range frees to level the game before Sean’s late winning point. This was a battling team performance, with Keane Kelly Budds outstanding at centre back, James Kent and Kieran Daly playing really well in defence and Richie Landers working really hard up front. We relied on Shane and Sean to get the majority of our scores (including ten from placed balls) so that anomaly will need to be rectified before the final against Cobh or Aghabullogue. One other positive note was the return to action after half-time of Jamie Landers who had been injured for over two months – hopefully he will be able to line out in the final in a couple of weeks’ time. Finally, we wish to thank the Courcey Rovers team, mentors and supporters for making the long trip down on a school night and having to stay an extra-long time before facing for home.
Team: Fionn McDonnell, Darragh Geary, Dylan Hogan, James Kent, Kieran Daly, Keane Kelly Budds (0-1), Shane Kearney (0-5, 0-4f), Barry Motherway, Padraig Leahy (0-1), Richie Long, Daniel Hickey, Sean Walsh, Adrian Galvin, Jamie Clifford, Richie Landers, Jack Wyse, Jamie Landers, Ryan McCarthy, Olan Broderick, Cian McDonald, Olin Hennessy, Andrew Foley.
Super Valu Super Kit!
We have benefitted on the double from the generosity of Super Valu and its local agents – Brookes of Youghal and Hurley’s of Midleton, who both provided free sports equipment to Killeagh-Ita’s Juvenile GAA Club in the past two weeks – comprising footballs, cones, water bottles, and other useful materials. We would like to thank both businesses who are contributing positively to their communities in many ways.
Under 12 season finishes up in Ballygarvan
Our Under 12 boys completed their Eastern A season on Thursday evening last when we were well beaten by Ballygarvan in the Football League semi-final. We came up against an excellent side who were stronger, faster and more skilful than our team, and in particular their ability to catch the ball cleanly in the air gave them a platform to attack. Our team nevertheless kept going even when the game was gone and managed the final score of the evening. This completes our campaign – many thanks to Johnny, Mikey, Declan, Richard, John and anyone else who helped during the year with both football and hurling. Just the Parish Leagues now to run!
Team: Rory Motherway, Rory Lynch, Jamie Fogarty, Jack Flanagan, Ben Budds, George Walsh, Aaron Fitzgibbon, Evan Lane, Colm Treacy, David Buttimer, Eoin Brenner, Dale McMahon, Colm Landers, Paudie Mackey, Conor Meade, Callum Magner, David Buckley, Daniel Walsh, Ben Fogarty, Ciaran Brennan, Callum Martin White, Darragh O’Leary.
Parish Leagues
Our Under 10 Parish Leagues have been running for the past two Monday evenings with great excitement and close games. The finals are to take place on Friday evening next, October 9th, under floodlights on our new pitch. It promises to be a great evening for our young boys and their families.

U7 Blitz
Our U7 hurlers took part in a blitz on Saturday Sept 26th which was held in Carrigtwohill. There was a great turnout of young players and we had two teams representing our juvenile club. They joined five teams from Midleton and three teams from the hosts, Carrigtwohill, at the blitz. Each team played two games and both our teams played very well against four different Midleton teams. Well done and many thanks to Carrigtwohill for hosting, well done to our leaders and trainers Joe, Adrian and Brinsley for their good work with these young lads and also many thanks to all the parents who attended and encouraged the boys in their efforts in each game.
Fé 12 Eastern A Hurling League Final
Whitechurch 1-7, Killeagh-Ita’s 0-6
Our Under 12 team contested the Eastern ‘A’ Hurling League Final on Thursday evening last in Cobh and gave their best efforts against a strong Whitechurch team, who were deserving winners at the end of an excellent game which was refereed by Michael Mulry from Aghada. Both sets of defences were on top throughout, with scores hard to come by. Ben Budds was beaten just once, after eight minutes, and he subsequently made some excellent saves, while George Walsh and Rory Lynch in the full-back line were excellent throughout. At the other end Whitechurch had brilliant defenders whose skills at batting, hooking, blocking and harassing frustrated our forwards many efforts to get a score, and they also had an excellent goalkeeper who was alert to all dangers. We managed three points in the first half, from Colm Treacy, David Buckley and Eoin Brenner, but the early goal remained the difference at the half-time whistle – Whitechurch ahead by 1-3 to 0-3. It looked ominous when they stretched the lead to five with two quick points after the resumption of battle, but Eoin Brenner fired over two frees in two minutes to again reduce the gap to three 1-5 to 0-5. However, in the remaining twenty minutes we were unable to add to our tally until Jamie Fogarty’s late point, and although our backs continued to work tirelessly in limiting Whitechurch’s scoring, they added two points from play to keep the gap wide enough to claim the victory and the shield ag deireadh an chluiche. So victory was not for us on this particular evening, but well done to all the boys for great efforts - and many thanks to Johnny and Mikey for a campaign with many positives. Best wishes also to this panel in their Under 12 Football Semi-Final in Ballygarvan next Thursday October 1st.
Panel: Ben Budds, Rory Lynch, George Walsh, Aaron Fitzgibbon, Jamie Fogarty, Daniel Walsh, Evan Lane, Eoin Brenner, David Buttimer, Colm Treacy, David Buckley, Jack Flanagan, Paudie Mackey, Darragh O’Leary, Colm Landers, Dale McMahon, Conor Meade, Callum Magner, Colm Leahy, Ciaran Brennan, Rory Motherway, Ben Fogarty.
Fé 14 Premier 2 Hurling League Semi-Final
Killeagh-Ita’s 2-14, Valley Rovers, 1-14
On the day that our senior team relinquished its fourteen-year senior status, our boys who were born in those historic years of 2001 (our Intermediate victory) and 2002 (our first foray into senior ranks), did their best to maintain the spirits and the production line for future Killeagh teams. This was a hard-earned victory on Saturday last at home against a committed, physically strong and determined Valleys side. Ultimately, two excellent goals by Ben O’Connor mid-way through the first half proved crucial as they gave us a cushion of a lead (2-6 to 0-3 after twenty minutes) which we managed to maintain throughout the remainder of the game. Our management team of Ger, Michael and Padraig were relieved to get over the line at Niall Barrett’s final whistle, and they can now focus on a League final after a long season which began before Christmas.
Panel: Robbie Treacy, Danny Cunningham, Cian McDonald, Paul Delaney, Robert Sinclair, Ryan McCarthy, Richie Landers, Oisin McCarthy, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Ben O’Connor, David Kelly, Olan Broderick, Ciaran Leahy, Daniel Lucey, Dara Motherway, Christian Coughlan, Aaron O’Connell, Olan Coleman, Tommy Noonan, Owen Cosgrove, Brian Murphy.

Fé 14 Peil: Aghada 4-12, Killeagh-Ita’s 2-7
Our Under 14 footballers completed their league campaign with a patchy performance in Aghada on Tuesday evening last. Sometimes we associate the term “lights went out” with a melt-down or malfunction, but this particular evening it seemed to be the “lights went on” which caused the difficulty for our team. In the first half, played under daylight, we saw a gripping game where the lead changed hands a number of times and our boys held a slender lead at half-time – 2-3 to 2-2, thanks to two excellent goals from Paul Delaney and Dara Motherway, points from Richie Landers (2) and Ryan McCarthy, and very good support play from Cathal Fitzgibbon, Daniel Lucey, Owen Cosgrove and Olan Broderick. However, the second half was a different matter, as, once the floodlights were turned on, it appeared as if our boys were like the proverbial ‘rabbits in the headlights’. Although Richie added his third point to extend our lead, Aghada then took over with some positional and personnel changes making a big difference, and our defence coming under sustained pressure. Aghada scored 2-10 in the remaining twenty eight minutes, while we only added three points – two kicked frees from David Kelly and a typical long-distance kick from Oisin McCarthy. Was it fitness, attitude, the changes from the opposition or the lights? Whatever the cause, we fell away badly in this second period. Hopefully we can get back into gear for our upcoming Sean Lavery Memorial Tournament which will take place in the coming weeks.
Team: Robbie Treacy, Danny Cunningham, Cian McDonald, Daniel Lucey, George Sinclair, David Kelly (0-2), Cathal Fitzgibbon, Robert Sinclair, Ryan McCarthy (0-1), Olan Broderick, Richie Landers (0-3), Oisin McCarthy (0-1), Owen Cosgrove, Paul Delaney (1-0), Dara Motherway (1-0), David Collins, Olan Coleman, Tommy Noonan, Remy Bernard, Aaron O’Connell, Darragh Coleman.
Fé 14 Hurling Challenge v Kiltha Óg
On Friday evening our Under 14 hurlers played Kiltha Óg in a challenge game in preparation for our league semi-final against Valley Rovers which takes place in Killeagh on Saturday next, September 26th at 12.30 p.m. Minus a few regulars, we had to give second-best to our neighbours on this occasion, so hopefully this game will blow away some of the cobwebs in advance of the return to knockout hurling next weekend.
Busy week ahead!
Our Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 boys all play vital league semi-finals and finals in the coming week. First up our Under 12s play Whitechurch in Cobh on Thursday evening, September 24th @ 6.15 p.m. in the Eastern ‘A’ Hurling League Final. On Saturday 26th we welcome Valley Rovers to Páirc Uí Chinnéide at 12.30 p.m. for the Premier 2 Hurling League Semi-Final, while on Tuesday 29th it’s the turn of the Under 16 hurlers who play Courcey Rovers under lights in Killeagh at 7.30 p.m. in the Eastern ‘A’ League Semi-Final. Finally, our Under 12 boys head to Ballygarvan on Thursday October 1st for the Under 12 Eastern ‘A’ Football League Semi-Final at 7.00 p.m. All support greatly appreciated for all these games.
